TofuguTV: Cat Island, Japan, Part 1 (by tofugu)

L’île aux chats… sans chats (hormis les deux dernières minutes).

Cat Island (aka Tashirojima / 田代島) is a small island off of Ishinomaki (and all of this is east of Sendai, Japan). Most of the population is pretty old, with an average age between 60 and 70 (that’s old!). Their main industries include fishing and people visiting to come look at the cats. A while back, fishermen started feeding the cats thinking it was good luck. After a while, people started noticing the amount of cats on the island, and it became a little tourist attraction.

There are two villages on the island (Oodomari and Nitoda), with Nitoda containing most of the cats. Near the centerish of the island (though closer to Nitoda) is the “Cat Shrine” (猫神社). There are cat shaped buildings (also near Nitoda), as well as various other (smaller) attractions. Although you can walk from Oodomari to Nitoda, most of the “fun stuff” is on the Nitoda side, so try to stop on that side if you’re going.

Earthquake Info: Cat Island was very close to the quake. Although there’s a lot of info floating about in regards to the damage to the island, there’s nothing concrete, and nothing I’d deem as “reliable.” Most of Nitoda is built on a pretty big hill, so that’s a good sign. Oodomari was built a lot lower and closer to sea level. Solely based off of that, I’d say (at the very least) you can assume all the “Tashirojima is submerged in water” headlines are just there to get hits. Aside from that, absolutely nothing reliable has come out. If you want to support Cat Island, wait a year or so and go visit them (and spend money). In the meantime, spreading rumors about Cat Island won’t help, so everybody calm down and wait for good info!

JAPAN’S ANIMALS NEED HELP, TOO!
For each person who ‘likes’ the Facebook Page of Dog Bless You, a dollar will be donated to help finance the use of search and rescue dogs that are so critical in disaster situations like what’s happening in Japan right now. You can also donate to Animal Refuge Kansai, the American Humane Association, The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, or World Vets. Japan Cat Network, together with Heart Tokushima and Animal Friends Niigata has formed Japan Animal Rescue and Support.
It was thought that Cat Island had been completely submerged, but there’s been an update saying that the cats and people on Tashirojima are okay, however, they have a lot of building damage and are in need of necessities for both humans and cats.

I was talking with Project member Katherine Streeter the other day about the quake and devastation in Japan. We are both, as I am sure many of you are, heartsick. I was hoping that the Project could aid in some way with the care, rescue, and reuniting the animals with their people. Katherine came up with a fabulous idea of creating an online show of sorts to express our support and help raise donations. I love this idea! What we have come up with so far is this… a slideshow featuring Japanese themed animal art. The video will be sort of a public announcement to provide information of where people can donate directly to help animals in Japan. The video will be free to post on all media pages. There will be nothing for sale…. we want the funds to get to Japan as quickly as possible. If you feel inspired to create something please do. You can email your image to the Project in a high quality/resolution jpeg. We will set up a special page about everyone involved here on the blog with contact information so folks can contact you directly if they wish to see more of your work. If you have any ideas for this special video please feel free to share. We hope to get your submissions as soon as possible. Email your submission to fabanimalrescueproject@yahoo.com.
